Why Utah May Provide a More Unique Array of Hiking Choices Than Any Other State In america
For individuals like myself who enjoy hiking in Utah... despite the claims from some rural Utahns... it quickly becomes apparent the Utah wilderness isn't only for the rich, the elite, or even the young. No, far from it.

Escape on a single of Utah's countless trails and you will soon see people of every age group, sizes, shapes, and ethnic backgrounds. Exactly what a fantastic low-cost method to enjoy Utah's stunning scenery.

If you are able just to walk, you can enjoy hiking in Utah. And backpacking. And even if you can't, there are adventures that you should enjoy also. It's not necessary to be in great shape. And you have no need for a lot of equipment.

Sure, if you want to spend money, you are able to drop hundreds... even thousands... of dollars. Expensive shoes. State-of-the-art backpacks. And all the latest gadgets sold at REI can all accumulate.

But what do you really need? You will get by with a decent, comfortable set of walking or hiking shoes. And little else. I still make use of a 5'6" walking stick I made after i would be a young boy in Canada a long time ago.

Should you continue overnight trips, obviously an investment is higher. Motels, food and gas can also add up. And the initial outlay for many good equipment. But think about it. After those expenses, what's left?

You can use that same equipment again and again, year after year. And the best part? You're able to enjoy millions of acres of unbelievable, roadless country with little or no outlay.

By today's standards, hiking in Utah is as close to free as possible. Perhaps you have taken a vacation to Disneyland or Disney World lately? Wow! Which will drain your wallet.

But better still. Consider the freedom. The possible lack of stress and regulation...being told how to proceed... so prevalent in today's world. No TSA. No body scans. No groin and breast groping uniformed Gestapo to deal with.

When I'm on the trail, none of this exists. It all gets left behind. No TV, no internet, no smartphone. Well, I do carry a camera.

Obviously, when i state you need to be minimally fit to hike, I must qualify that statement. I am fully conscious of the health from the person with average skills within our country. And other countries.

Minimal fitness does not mean what it used to. But there actually are hikes readily available for people of almost all physical capabilities. Of course, the better condition you're in, the more you'll enjoy it.

Utah hiking offers unparalleled opportunities to escape. To find information about and see a novelty helmet soaring majestically overhead while grasping for something to keep onto and also hardwearing . balance.

To hear a bugling bull elk in the middle of a stand of golden quakies in the fall. To see a monster mule deer buck give you credit like it's rarely seen a person - that's happened to me. To come face to face having a bull moose standing right in the middle of your trail. And not moving.

To listen to... and feel... the wind howl over the Colorado Plateau like a freight train. To throw a line into a high-country trout stream and take out a trout that wasn't planted. Maybe see a mountain sheep walking in the trail in your direction on an island in the center of a salt lake. I've seen this too.

How about sitting on top of the highest peak on that island and having a 360 degree look at... what seems like... all northern Utah.

You can enjoy all of this and much more by hiking in Utah.

Hiking in Utah could be grouped into three main amounts of difficulty: beginners, families, and experienced backpackers. You can drive to... or real close to... the trailhead on most from the hikes you'll find out about on this site.

Utah offers a unique mixture of hiking terrain. From high-altitude alpine hikes in a variety of mountain ranges throughout the state. To abandon and canyon country hiking. A really diverse mix.
